OGENE MIDI

Created by Chidi Nwaubani for the Nigerian Pavilion, Ogene MIDI, draws deeply from the collaborative, communal, and spiritual essence of the South Eastern Nigerian tradition, while reimagining the ogene as a bridge between the organic and digital worlds. The ogene, a traditional Igbo metal gong, has always been more than a musical instrument. It was historically used to summon the community, announce important events, and provide rhythmic foundation in music and dance. Its sound is a call to gather, to participate, to co-create-a perfect metaphor for our installation, where the ogene’s touch becomes the starting point for digital creation. Cooperating the ogene turning from a musical instrument to an interactive creative instrument. When two or more people come togteher through touch they create a human connection and a new sculpture creations. The bridge or connection made via human touch is the catalyst for creation and a methaphor for the collaborative creation , reflecting the African (and specifically Igbo) perspective that artistic expression is embedded in the community and brought forth through collective effort The installation invites reflection onto how we engage how we engage onto the world and reflects on a collaborative creation from an African perspective. A new digital sculpture is created by the users every time they touch interact the sculpture with a multitude of creation unique through every touch.
